The United Kingdom declared war against Germany on 4th August 1914, one hundred years ago. This devastating war lasted until the Armistice ceasefire of 11th November 1918, confirmed by the peace treaty of Versailles the following year. The causes of the war are complicated and the interested reader would do well to look on the internet rather than for me to attempt a summary here. From a British perspective it is sobering to note that over twice as many British servicemen died in this conflict than in the 1939-45 war.
The medals listed are arranged by country in English alphabetical order.
