case: the lid is gilt embossed METROPOLITAN CHALLENGE CUP 16TH
JULY 1900 and lists the oarsmen (plus their weights) thus: V.H.MERCER (BOW),
F.S.LOWE, J.W.KNIGHT, H.S.SOUTTAR, G.FRASER, G.T.WESTERN, O. MORAY-BROWN,
R.S.CRIER (STROKE) C.H.L. BOYTON (COX) Notes:
VH Mercer rowed for London Rowing Club at Henley Regatta in 1903, competing for
the Grand Challenge Cup; F S Rowe, a member of London Rowing Club, was
instrumental in founding The Remenham Club at Henley – a social club for
oarsmen from the principal London rowing clubs; J W Knight was a runner-up in
the Silver Goblets & Nickalls'
Challenge Cup at Henley in 1902, also representing London Rowing Club; G T
Western rowed for Cambridge University in 1901; C H L Boyton coxed the London
Rowing Club crew at Henley on four occasions between 1900 and 1907, competing
for the Grand Challenge Cup. Away from rowing, H S Souttar became Chairman of
the British Medical Association Council. All of this from I obtained from brief
