Notes: Richard Cobden and John Bright were founders of the Anti-Corn Law League, eventually succeeding in abolishing the 1815 Corn Laws – protectionist laws which kept the prices of domestic corn artificially high and impeded free trade and thus prosperity. Sound familiar?
