Notes: The corvette L'Astrolabe commanded by Dumont D'Urville sailed from Toulon on April 25th to explore the South Seas. During this voyage they discovered in 1828 the remains of La Perouse’s tragic expedition which has been lost on the Vemi l'Oro Reef, New Hebrides, in 1788, forty years earlier. The expedition stopped in Mauritius in November 1828. Due to illness among the crew, 14 members, including the ship’s physician Joseph-Paul Gaimard, were left behind to recover.
