Obv: uniformed bust of youthful Napoleon right

Rev: Victory flies over the globe holding sword, laurel wreath and palm, BATAILLE DE MONTENOTTE in exergue with year (1796)


Condition: Extremely fine or nearly so; Diameter: 40mm

Notes: this was the first time Napoleon’s effigy had appeared on a medal or coin (although the medal was probably struck a few years after the battle). He had the rank of General although still well within his twenties. The French army under General Bonaparte fought an Austrian army in northwestern Italy on 12th April 1796, resulting in a French victory.
