Obv: a steamboat with sails, TO THE GLORY OF PHILOSOPHERS AND OPERATIVES 1843 above, in exergue THE POWER OF STEAM BRAVES THE QUIET OF THE SEAS ENCOUNTERS THE CONTRARY WINDS AND WILLE (sic) CARRY CIVILASATION (sic) THROUGH THE WHOLE UNIVERSE in 6 lines

Rev: a steam train travelling right, village beyond with a locomotive on a viaduct, Fame above left, in exergue THE GENIUS OF RAILWAYS, LEVELS THE MOUNTAINS, RAISES THE VALLEY, CROSSES RIVERS AND FACILTATES THE COMMERCE OF NATIONS.


Condition: With a black tone and raised rims a little battered, otherwise good very fine; Diameter: 51mm

Notes: A somewhat enigmatic medal, another version exists with French legends; Caqué should have consulted an English dictionary before engraving the obverse legend…
