Walter Sydney Masterman was born in Wimbledon
(London) on 17th July 1875, attending Tonbridge School and
Weymouth College before going up to Christ’s College, Cambridge, in 1897. He
was a Cambridge football blue in 1899 and 1900. He enlisted as a Lieutenant
in the 2nd Battalion Welsh Guards, seeing service in South Africa
1900 to 1902. He became a captain in 1901 and served in the Great War
1914-1918 as a major in the Welch Regiment. After military service he became
a schoolmaster and prolific author of fiction novels, specialising in horror
and science fiction genres. He died at Brighton in 1946. Provenance:
