Notes: Professor Philip Grierson (1910-2006), was professor emeritus of numismatics at Cambridge University and Fellow of Caius for over 70 years. His vast collection of medieval European coinage formed the basis of the series of publications Medieval European Coinage. As a footnote, in my early days in numismatics I once had a brief correspondence with him about a Merovingian tremissis. He was charming and patient!
