Obv: bearded bust in high relief of Mehemet Ali right wearing a fez, MEHEMET ALI RÉGÉNERATEUR DE L’ÉGYPTE to left, same legend in Arabic to right

 

Rev: a scimitar with NESIB 1839 and same legend in Arabic, IL SAIT DÉFENDRE AVEC NOBLESSE L’HONNEUR DE SON PAYS (‘He knows to defend with nobility the honour of his country’) in right field, same in Arabic to left

 

Condition: Good extremely fine; Diameter: 51mm

Provenance: from an old 19th century collection, with ink ticket.

 

Notes: Muhammad Ali Pasha, was Governor of Egypt from 1805-1848 and founded the ruling dynasty which ended with the deposition of King Farouk in 1952. The Battle of Nesib in 1839 was an Egyptian victory over Ottoman forces in southeastern Turkey.
