Mehmet Ali Pasha, Governor of Misir (Cairo), elected 1805, Sudan (which he
conquered 1822-1823), Filistin, Suriye, Hicaz, Mora, Tasoz and Girit. Later
he occupied Syria 1831-1840. He is buried in the Alabaster Mosque in the
Citadel in Cairo, the same Citadel where he massacred the Mamlukes in 1811.
Mehmet Ali Pasha was an Albanian commander and administrator in the Ottoman
army, and self-declared viceroy in Egypt. He is regarded by some as the
founder of modern Egypt and facilitated the overland mail route for Britain,
between the Mediterranean and the Red Sea. Price
