Notes: This medal was struck circa 1740. John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough (1650-1722) was a successful career soldier, commanding victorious armies at the battles of Blenheim (1704), Ramilliesm (1706), Oudenarde (1708) and Malplaquet (1709). Blenheim Palace was built for him but only finished in 1733, 11 years after his death. He was the ancestor of Sir Winston Churchill (1874-1965), which was also the name and title of John Churchill’s father.
