Anne, the Battle of Almenara 1710, bronze medal by J Croker

Obv: laureate bust left, ANNA AVGVSTA around

Rev: battle scene with cavalry charging, PVGNA EQVESTRIS (‘Equestrian battle’) around

References: MI ii 373/218; E 445

Condition: Good very fine; Diameter: 48mm

Notes: The medal is unusual in that it depicts the precise and decisive moment in the battle when General James Stanhope (1673-1721, later 1st Earl), seized the bridle of General Amezega’s horse and strikes him with his sword, killing him. As Medallic Illustrations notes, this was an exploit worthy of an earlier age.
