Notes: He led a full and interesting life – I refer the interested reader to Wikipedia’s entry about him. In brief he was a Congregationalist minister who supported the abolition of slavery. He denounced sexual impropriety but was rumoured to be fond of extra-marital flings himself. He was a party in a famous adultery case in 1875. His sister Harriet was the author of the well-known abolitionist novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin.
