Rev: seven busts in medallions of the bishops opposed to the reading of James II’s Indulgence

Condition: About very fine, small piercing at 12 o’clock; Diameter: 48mm


Notes: James II asked Anglican ministers to read his Declaration of Indulgence to their congregations. The Declaration gave religious freedoms to both Catholics and non-conformists alike. Many Anglicans were opposed to this and the Archbishop of Canterbury, with seven other bishops, refused to read it out. They were imprisoned in the Tower and tried, but acquitted.
