Thomas Leyland (1752-1827), won the lottery which enabled him to set up
in business. He then made a fortune from slavery and when the slave
trade was abolished in 1807 he set up his own bank in Liverpool, in
partnership with his nephew and fellow slaver Richard Bullin. He was
also mayor of the city on three occasions. He was unsuccessful in the
1816 election, losing to George Canning. Price
