Notes: Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778), Swedish botanist and zoologist, he organised the modern system of categorising living organisms. Wellington Horticultural Society may have been instituted the previous year in 1850. Little is known of ‘Sherriff’, Forrer merely recording the name as a Liverpool die-sinker of the early 19th century. There is some doubt as to whether this is Wellington in Shropshire or the place of the same name in Somerset. I’ve opted for Shropshire based on the medallist being from Liverpool, but it remains open to conjecture.
