Notes: The Stamp Act of 1765 authorised a tax on American colonists and caused much grievance. It was repealed the following year as a matter of expediency by the British government, but had already given rise to the colonists’ slogan “No Taxation Without Representation”. Ultimately it began a chain of events which led to American independence.
