France,
Louis XVIII (1815-1824), large bronze presentation medal circa 1820 by Gayrard and Andrieu Obv: barehead bust of Louis XVIII right Rev:
Pallas Athena seated left holding laurels Condition:
Extremely fine; Diameter: 68mm Reference:
none found Notes:
Louis was in exile from 1791 to 1814, from 1809 to 1814 at Hartwell
House, a few miles from where I write this note. He ruled from
1814-1830 with the exception of the ‘Hundred Days’ in 1815
which briefly saw the dramatic return of Napoleon. I have been unable
to establish the reason that this medal was struck – perhaps just
laudatory in its intent. Price
